Tuesday, June 9, 2020 Lesson 7: Giving Two Reasons Opinionators! Last week, we talked about using the word ‘because’ in our opinion stories. Today we are going to talk about using the word ‘because’ and giving two reasons to back up our opinion. If I say, “I don’t like pizza” you are going to want to know why. That is when we use the word ‘because’ and state our two reasons. For example, I could say,I don’t like pizza because it is greasy and spicy. When we give our opinion it is always best to give a reason why but two reasons are even better. Today I am going to model telling my opinion story across the pages. I will give my opinion on the first page, write one reason on the second page and write a final reason on the third page. Are you ready? I think that today I will give my opinion on apples. Page 1: I think apples are the best fruit. Page 2: Apples are sweet and a little sour, too. Page 3:Apples can be eaten in a lot of different ways. Apples are the best fruit. Did you see what I did in that last sentence? I told you my opinion once more. This helps you to really understand my opinion. I would like for you to share your opinion story with a family member or pet today and use your fingers to tell it across the pages! *Families- Encourage your learner to share a final sentence for their story to really drive their opinion. Monday, June 8, 2020 Today is Monday! That means weekend write! I miss our weekend write days in the classroom and weekend share during morning meeting. Here is mine: I went for a long walk because it was warm.
Lesson 6: Using the Word Because Opinionators! We have been working hard on writing opinion stories. Today I want to talk to you more about the why when it comes to opinion stories. Why do we share our opinion? We share our opinions when we like something and when we don’t like something. We give our opinion so others understand our thoughts. When we have strong thoughts about something we often need to explain ourselves. For example, if I told you I did not like candy, you might think that was silly so I would need to further explain. I could say, I do not like candy because it can give me cavities. Did you hear the word ‘because’ in that sentence? The word ‘because’ helps to further explain your thoughts. Today I am going to model my opinion story and use the word to explain my thoughts. I am going to write about my favorite place to go. I like the park because I can smell fresh flowers. Why is the park my favorite place? Yes, because I can smell fresh flowers. Turn to your family member or pet and tell them your favorite place to go. Be sure to add in the word ‘because’ to further explain why it is your favorite. Today as you begin writing, I want you to think about that word ‘because’ and how you can add it into your story. *Families- Try and encourage your learner to share a hook for their story. If they are unable to put their hook into written words, have them orally state their story’s hook. Ready, Set, Write!
Our first picture is broccoli! Do you like broccoli? Do you not like broccoli? Why or why not? I like broccoli because you can eat it uncooked or cooked!Go ahead and take a look at the other pictures below! Maybe you will learn something new about your family member! Writer's Workshop June 1, 2020 Opinionators! Today we are going to be giving our opinions on the spot. That means that you will be shown a picture and you will quickly turn to your family member/pet to share your opinion! We do have one rule and that is to make sure we are all being respectful of one another’s opinion. Remember that it is okay to have a different opinion than your friends and family. We will practice with one first! Are you ready? Okay! Our first picture is broccoli! It is at the top, left. Do you like broccoli? Do you not like broccoli? Why or why not? I like broccoli because you can eat it uncooked or cooked!Go ahead and take a look at the other pictures below! Maybe you will learn something new about your family member! Nice work sharing your opinions on the spot. You might be asked to give your opinion on something and you need to be able to think fast (like a race car) to share it out. Today I am going to model my opinion and give a reason as to why this is my opinion. Today I think I will give my opinion on the best vacation I’ve been on. The beach is the best. At the beach you get to swim and play in the sand. The beach is the best. Wow! Did you see what I did there? I told you my opinion, gave you a reason and then told you my opinion once again. This helps your reader to really hear and understand that this is your opinion! Today I want you to think of something that you would like to give your opinion on and then write an opinion story about it using your opinion, a reason, and your opinion again! Have fun! *Families- Try to encourage your students to state their opinions at the beginning and the end of their story! Weekend Write Today is Monday, that means weekend write! How was your weekend? The weather was so nice. Here is my share. I mowed the lawn and finished my garden. May 27, 2020 TuesdayLesson 3: Fact vs. Opinion Opinionators! We have been discussing opinions and opinion stories. Today we are going to take time to discuss the difference between facts and opinions. If I say 'cake is gross' and 'cake is baked' do you know which of those is actually a fact?
Yes, 'cake is baked' is a fact and 'cake is gross' is my opinion because some people like to eat cake and some don't!
Next, check out the dog picture to the left. We are going to come up with a few facts about the picture and a few opinions. Are you ready?
Kindergarteners- can you come up with three facts about this dog? What is one opinion about the dog? Next, I would like to model for you my opinion story. However, today I am going to challenge myself to writing more than just one sentence. Today I am going to write two sentences. I am going to make sure I write one sentence with my opinion and one sentence that is a fact. I am going to give an opinion story about my dogs. I will write, My dog is the best dogs ever. She is soft and fast Today I want you to think of an animal. I want you to share with someone 1 fact about that animal and one opinion. After, I want you to try and write your own opinion story!
May 26, 2020 Today is Tuesday. We had a long weekend due to Memorial Day. The weather was amazing! Today's Writer's Workshop is weekend write. I am sure you have lots to share. Here is my story: I opind my pool and swam. May 21, 2020 Today, we will start a new unit in Writer's Workshop - Unit 4: Writing with Opinion - Students will write opinion stories that state two reasons. By using a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic.
Lesson 1: “Opinionators! Yes?”Boys and girls, you have continued to amaze me with all of your hard work! You might remember that we just wrapped up our unit on becoming narrators. Now it’s time for us to keep plugging along in our journey to become the best story writers we can be. Today we are going to continue learning about the different types of writing! The next type of writing we will be learning is called an opinion story.
When we start our Writer’s Workshop, I’m going to say “Opinionators!” You will reply back with, “Yes?” Let’s try it! “Opinionators!”(yes?) “Opinionators!” (yes?) “Opinionators!” (yes?)
I’m sure you are wondering what exactly an opinion story is so let’s talk about that first!
An opinion story is a story that tells how you feel about something and it gives reason for why you feel that way.
For example, I might like cake more than popsicles but that is my opinion.
You might like popsicles more than cake and that is okay because that is your opinion. An opinion is a way you feel! Let’s talk about something that people have strong opinions about- ketchup and mustard. When you think about giving your opinion you can use the words ‘I like’ or ‘I do not like’ and then say what it is. Let’s try it out with ketchup and mustard. I will go first:I like ketchup and mustard because they are yummy on a hotdog. Now it’s your turn! I think we know what an opinion is and is it okay to have a different opinion than your friends? Yes, it is! Today I will model my opinion on my favorite food below:I like red apples.Do you think it’s important that I stated what color apples I like? Yes! Now it’s your turn to write an ‘I like’ opinion story! Ready, Set, Write!
May 19, 2020 Today, we will wrap up all of the awesome work we have done so far in this unit of Writer's Workshop. In this unit we learned about writing mechanics, writing topics, and how to be storytellers. Today, I would like you to write one more story (using a story book - 3 pages.) Write the beginning on one page, middle on the next page, and end on the last page. Make your illustrations colorful! When you are done, share your story with someone at home! I am so proud of the work you have done in this unit! Great job!! May 18, 2020 Today is Monday! That means...Weekend Write! Here is my story. I worked in my garden. Send me a picture of you story! May 13,2020 Families - today your writer will need a story booklet. This can be three pages stapled together or simply three pages for them to write on. Boys and Girls - do you remember my story about the grocery store, when I thought I forgot my wallet? I can write a book using the beginning, middle, and end. First page/Beginning- I went to the store. Second page/Middle - I could not find my wallet. Third Page/End - I kept looking and found it. Today when you write, use your pages to write the beginning, middle and end. Ready, Set, Write! May 12, 2020 Today, we will learn that we can write story about a picture we have seen. Look at the picture to the left. What is this a picture of? That's right! It is a ball. What else can you tell me about the ball? Where is the ball? Why do you think the ball is there? Now, what if this was your ball? Would your story change? I think I could write a story about this ball by making a connection to a ball I have, like this...When I play with my ball like this. I like to play with my kids. My story might sound like this... My kids and I play in the sand. We like to play with the red, blue, and white ball. Did you see how I uesd one picture then made my own story from it? Today, I am going to post 2 pictures, to the left. One is of flowers, the other crayons. If you are inspired by one picture then you can write a matching story. Ready, Set, Write! May 6, 2020 We have been working so hard on knowing what storytellers add to their illustrations and writing. We have talked about detailed pictures, emotion, capital letters, and finger spaces. Today we are going to talk about something called ADDING ON. That's right, what happens if you look at a story and realize you could add even more to make it great? Look at my story from last week (when I thought I forgot my wallet.) I didn't write any sentences. I could add on one or two sentences to make my story even better. This could be my story: I went to the stor. I did not hav my wallit. I fond it in my prse! After you feel your story is done, go back and check over. Can you add another sentence? Or a detail to your illustration? Ready, set, write!
May 4, 2020 Today is Monday! That means weekend write! Today for Writer's Workshop, please write about something you did this weekend. Then add an illustration. Ready, Set, Write!!
Wednesday, April 29, 2020 Today we are going to talk about something that is important in a story. That is having a beginning, middle, and ending. Please listen to this story, One Day The End. We don't know what the girl made or how she became a spy. We only know what happened at the beginning and the end. The writer left out the middle of these events. I want to tell you about a story that happened to me this weekend. I went to the grocery store. When I got there I realized I forgot my wallet. Then I stuck my hand down further into my purse and I found it after all. We can show the beginning, middle, and end of our story in an illustration. Look at my example, to the left. I made three rectangles to draw. Then wrote a B (beginning), M (middle), E (end) at the top of each. Now I can show the beginning, middle, and end of my story. This is called elapsed time. Today, please try to draw boxes for the beginning, middle and end of your story. Make an illustration for each part. Then try to write about each one. Ready, set, write! It is Monday! That means - Weekend Write! Please write about something you did this weekend. The weather was so nice on Saturday. I hope you were able to spend some time outside. Here is my story. I did lots uv otside wrk. I plantd noo gras. We have been working so hard thinking of writing topics. Did you know that topics can be found in places? If you can, go on a walk outside. If not, you can walk around your house. Take a piece of paper, pencil, and a hard surface to write on, like a book or clipboard. Make illustrations of what you see on your walk. The things we see can inspire us to write. On my walk, I saw our pond. That reminded me of when I caught a big fish. My story would be: I went fisheng at or pond. I cot a big fish. (Families - please accept "sound spelling") Now, write about what you saw on your walk!
